Diabetes is the killer on the rise …. The number of people with diabetes has increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Diabetes has increased more rapidly in middle and lower income countries. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes and lower extremity amputation. In this video, Dr. Susan Enjema Aweh, known as Dr. SEA, explains diabetes in simple terms.
A good part of the complications related to diabetes occur in low-income settings that are generally not informed due to low literacy rates. Therefore, we hope to make a difference by addressing these problems in a language spoken by all, a lingua franca spoken by more than 200 million people in Africa and the Caribbean. The ever-growing Internet and mobile platform is where we hope to meet some of them and others who can convey the message.
